Metiria Stanton Turei

Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Āti Haunui a Papārangi, Rangitane, Te Ātiawa

Metiria is a Pūkenga Matua at Te Kaupeka Tātai Ture Faculty of Law University of Otago, specialising in Māori Laws and Philosophy, Indigenous legal theory and visual jurisprudence. Metiria has been a social activist, lawyer and artist. She was a member of Parliament for the Green Party Aotearoa New Zealand for 15 years and co-leader of the Greens for much of that time. She lives in Ōtepoti and has two mokopuna.

Fighting Fire with Water – a way to navigate organised hate.

I have had personal experience of both persistent and inflammatory hate in my public roles. Although the adage ‘fight fire with fire’ might make sense sometimes, in fact, the only way to douse a fire is with water. I will consider what that looked for me in 2017 and over the whole of my political career.
