Ngāpuhi Speaks: Informing on key sovereignty issues was live-streamed on Saturday 21 March 2020 as part of the Tiriti-based Futures + Anti-racism online conference. This part is led by Dr Susan Heal and JJ Carberry. Ngāpuhi Speaks (2012) is an independent report on the hearing of this claim and was commissioned by Ngāpuhi kuia and kaumātua. While it comes to similar conclusions to the Tribunal’s report (2014), it more faithfully captures the evidence of the Ngāpuhi Nui Tonu speakers. Ngāpuhi Speaks is being used by a number of educational providers as an important resource for understanding the history and intentions of He Whakaputanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. A vision for race relations in Aotearoa webinar was held on 21 March 2020. Meng Foon states the imperative of a Tiriti based constitution for Aotearoa; the importance of aroha ki te tangata, and he reflects on the similarities in Māori and Chinese cultures promoting the centrality of manaakitanga and whakawhanaungatanga. With regards to his role as Race Relations Commissioner he states ‘I am here for Māoridom’. He highlights the importance of addressing structural discrimination by holding organisations to account, teaching Aotearoa history ā takiwā to remove ignorance and enable harmonious communities, and acknowledging that bullying, racism and discrimination is everywhere and that action plans to address this must be community based. Meng Foon has taken up the appointment of Race Relations Commissioner, after 24 years at the Gisborne District Council. Mr Foon was elected as a councillor in 1995 and in 2001 he was elected Mayor, a role he held for 18 years. He is one of a handful of people of Chinese descent to have become a mayor in New Zealand. He is fluent in English, Siyip and Te Reo Māori. “Kia mau tonu ki taku Ukaipo - Protecting my Patch!” webinar was held on Saturday 21 March 2020. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed by two peoples who to this day feel ripped-off by the other, yet the power imbalance of the British partner consolidates the tentacles of colonisation cannot easily be “30 seconds – walk away”. No disinfectant or chemically enhanced wash can rid the toxins of ignorance and cultural genocide. We need to celebrate the resilience of Māori and the fight-back nature they have carried over many generations but how do we decolonise our own thinking and behaviours and cease accepting that we as Iwi must always take the lower position; accept the compromise. When do we take our foot off the brakes and call out the racism in every institution – this feels like the 1980’s revisited. What do you think? Sharon was first exposed to protest on the 1975 Land March at the age of 13. Her father led the Bastion Point occupation in 1977-78, for 506 days, attended nuclear free and independent conferences in Fiji and Vanuatu and she attended several Hikoi to Waitangi, anti-Springbok tour march during 1981, Hikoi 1984, Youth March 1981, Homosexual law reform marches and recently visited Ihumatao with a large bucket of puha from Grey Lynn. Racism has been an everyday experience through her tertiary studies of Science and Health Science and film/tv career of 23 years. She produced Native Affairs for Māori Television in its first three seasons. She retired from camera and producing in 2010 and entered into the world of iwi governance which she spends full time protecting the settlement for Ngāti Whatua Orakei as an elected representative. Annette Sykes: Te Arawa activist and practicing lawyer since 1980 specialising in human rights with a strong focus on indigenous people in promoting tino rangatiratanga and advocating for constitutional change. Describes history of campaigns for indigenous nations to have their own voice and power, both internationally and locally. Centrality of activism and action against racism to create change. The Struggle for Ihumātao webinar was held on 30th March 2020. Ihumātao is a rare cultural, historical, and ancestral landscape on the shores of the Manukau Harbour. Pania Newton, lawyer and activist provides an overview of the history of the whenua and her people’s kaitiakitanga over 1,000 years of continuous occupation where 1,110 acres of land were confiscated with less than 50 remaining. She describes ongoing treaty breaches from 1950s to 2000s, then the formation of the Save Our Unique Landscape (SOUL) campaign; a great example of how biculturalism should look, led by kuia and rangatahi, supported by Pākehā allies. She explains ‘death by a thousand cuts’ where all legal and political means available were utilised (ToW, UN, Heritage NZ, courts) and the Parihaka inspired principles of peaceful, non-violent direct action. She perceives success as people connecting with the whenua and resonating with the kaupapa they are all working towards, and provides advice for rangatahi leadership and working with allies. Dominance of Pākehā mindset in bicultural attempts. The burden of work for marginalised to enlighten others. How racism is experienced and how it informs activism. Allyship.
